A quick overview of PAC-ANTIOQUIA

Helping us is equal to improving the conditions of health of the more needy

PAC-ANTIOQUIA

Is an Institute that Provides Health Services (Institución Prestadora de Servicios de Salud) - (IPS), Non Profit, founded in Medellín, Colombia, by pilots and Health Professionals, on the 17th of May 1965. The principal objective is the promotion, protection, treatment and recovery of a patient's health, in all Colombian Territory, with emphasis on the more remote zones and places, and using aircraft as the principal mode of transportation.

.

We provide health services to the indigenous people of Colombia who have immense problems with Public Health.

WHY THE PAC-ANTIOQUIA ?

The surface area of Colombia is 1.1 million square kilometres, a large territory that comprises inhospitable zones of difficult access some of which are only accessible by air. The population of over 43 million inhabitants is principally concentrated in the urban zones, as only 30% of the population inhabits the rural areas, where specialist medicine is virtually unheard of. In these zones 15% of the people live in precarious conditions, and it is virtually impossible for them to access these sophisticated treatments that are only available in some of the more complex hospitals of the larger cities.

The use of aircraft allows us to carry health services to places of difficult access in the heart of the rain forest, shore lines, plains and deserts.

FINANCIAL SOURCES

The PAC-ANTIOQUIA derives funds from the under noted sources:

1. Hospitals and municipalities : constitute the financing of those that have access to social security.

2. Private National Foundations such as Fundación Dividendo por Colombia, Fundación Exito, Fundación Alejandro Angel Escobar and Fraternidad Medellín.

3. International : This source of financing has allowed PAC - Antioquia   to count on various types of surgical equipment, anaesthesia, and ophthamlogical as well as an Ecograph.   Children of the Andes financed half the cost of an aircraft as well as 107 missions.
It is important to note the collaboration of Japanese, British and Dutch Embassies as well as the Fundación Mundo Unido, The Vatican City and the Fondo Caritativo de la Compañia de Jesus (FACSI). Institutions such as Genesis Foundation and Children of the Andes (COTA) of London, England have provided important help for the care of Children

PROGRAMMES

+ The programmes

The programmes have evolved with time and at the moment there are two types of programmes:
Specialized Medicine
Promotion and prevention

PAC-ANTIOQUIA and the local hospital cover 50% of the cost and the remaining 50% is financed by donations from national, international or private sources.

+ Specialized Medical Programmes

Tipical Mission
One day of work
Clinical and Surgical Medical attention
50 consultations
18 surgical cases

To complement the above the PAC_ANTIOQUIA have instituted a teaching and updating programme for the hospital personnel, health workers and school teachers. They serve as multipliers for the community.

The specialist services offered by PAC-ANTIOQUIA are: General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Gynaecology, Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Dermatology, Ear Nose and Throat, Orthopaedics, Urology and Plastic Surgery.

+ Public Health Programmes

Since 2002, PAC_ANTIOQUIA has also implemented health and disease prevention programmes of which the following should be highlighted:

• Visual Health Programme
During the 5 years of the programme Screening, Optometric Consults and subsidies for eye glasses for low income children; have benefited approximately 10,200 persons .

• Healthy Maternity Programme
Conferences with local community groups, strengthens the human resources and improves the quality of the attention given to the expecting mothers. The personnel responsible for the prenatal controls for the appraisal and handling of risk are trained to teach adolescent groups in the community aimed at the prevention of unwanted pregnancy and the dissemination of Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

• Health Alert Programme
Basic Health Programme to de-parasite the children, oral health and fluorination, optometric scanning, medical consults and work shops on feeding and nutritional hygiene.

• Programme for the Early Prevention and Detection of Cervical-Uterine cancer
This comprises the following activities:
Taking of samples, reading of plaques, laboratory reports, consult with Gynaecologist, Colposcopes and biopsies, coning and surgery.

• Programme for Sexual and Reproductive Education

Carried out by means of participating workshops, Conferences and educational actions with community groups Schools, Community Associations etc., aimed at the prevention of early pregnancy, prevention of cancer of the Uterine neck and dissemination of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS.
In Colombia pregnancy in adolescents is over 19% of the total women of child bearing age, a situation that is aggravated by the poverty of the country.
When we analyse our actions we can see that the work is significant.

The work of the PAC-Antioquia is strong and we hope to increase the health coverage to other communities.
